MIAMI (Aug. 27, 2020) – FIU softball head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson welcomes a pair of transfers to campus ahead of the 2021 season.
Adriana Otero joins FIU from Cal State Fullerton, while Gaby Ruiz transfers from Liberty.
“We are excited to have both these young ladies who are local kids and familiar with the FIU softball tradition,” head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “It’s good have both of them back home in Miami. Both bring experience to our team and will add depth to our middle infield positions.”
Otero began her collegiate career at Indian River State College, playing two seasons before transferring to Cal State Fullerton. Otero did not see any action with the Titans, due to the 2020 season being cut short by COVID-19.
Otero, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, played at nearby Westminster Christian School in Miami before enrolling at Indian River State College. Otero earned 60 hits, 15 doubles a triple and a homer in her two seasons at Indian River State. Otero is also a member of the Puerto Rican national team, having won a bronze medal with the junior team at the 2018 Junior Women’s World Championships.
Ruiz, a native of Miami, heads to FIU after spending the past season at Liberty. Ruiz played at Doral Academy and was tabbed as a First Team All-County three times, while also being named Rookie of the Year as a freshman at Doral. Ruiz also showed off her power with the bat, after hitting 10 home runs as a junior. The Miami native was a two-sport star in high school, also playing volleyball at Doral Academy.
