Florida State Looks Sharp
The Florida State Softball team kicked off their 2020 season in explosive fashion taking two games from No. 1, Alabama, and Coach Lonni Alameda earns win No. 700. The Seminoles walked-off the Tide the first time they met on an Elizabeth Mason walk-off single in the eighth inning. But, the most significant swing was when senior Dani Morgan hit a grand slam in the seventh to tie the game. It was a huge comeback win. The next day Caylan Arnold threw a five-inning, two-hit shutout as the Noles cruised to an 8-0 run-rule victory over Bama. In her 17th season, head coach Lonni Alameda earned her 700th career win with a 12-0 victory over Detroit Mercy.
UCF Show Offense
The Knights were hot at the plate most the weekend, posting a 5-1 record. They dropped a 3-2 game to Duke to split games on Sunday. The 40 combined runs UCF scored through its first six games mark the most runs scored through any first six games in program history.
Gators Go 4-1, add a No-No
Gator’s freshman Rylee Trlicek threw her first collegiate no-hitter in the five-inning victory over Georgia State. Trlicek’s no-hitter was the first thrown by a freshman since Kelly Barnhill achieved the feat against Arkansas May 8, 2016, and is only one of four freshman pitchers to throw a no-hitter in program history. It was also only the second opening weekend no-hitter ever recorded for the Gators. Tim Walton secured his 898th career victory. The only loss for Florida on the weekend came when the dropped an 11-2 game to No. 14 Michigan.
Rollins Moves to 8-0
Rollins moved to 8-0 on the year, shutting out Bentley 6-0 and defeating Queens 2-1 on Sunday to end their weekend. On the weekend, the Tars outscored their opponents by a margin of 22-2. Junior Chelsea Peace had two home runs of the weekend and now has three over eight games. Freshman Ashley Troutman stayed hot as well. The Panama City Beach native is off to fast start with a .500/.533/.679 (BA/OBP/SLG) slash line.
Nova Rolls at Home
Florida Gulf Coast transfer sophomore Emily Hess earned her fourth-straight win in a 4-2 win over East Stroudsburg. After tallying five strikeouts, Hess now leads the SSC with 33 strikeouts on the season.
Florida Southern Stuns West Florida
Florida Southern picked up two wins this weekend against ranked opponents beating No. 18 Alabama Huntsville 3-1, and No. 4 West Florida 1-0. Tiana Hernandez and Kristin Beacham combined to shut the Argos down. The two allowed just three hits over seven innings while striking out four. Maddi Conner came up to bat in the top of the sixth and would reach on a fielding error by the shortstop resulting in a run also scoring. That run would be the difference as the game ended 1-0.
College of Central Florida Moves to 13-0
The Patriots moved to a perfect 13-0 on the season with big wins over No. 5 Salt Lake and No. 18 Southern Idaho in Dothan, AL. They outscored the opposition 34-10. Sophomore Olivia Simon went for 8-13 at the plate with seven RBIs. In the circle sophomore, Barbara Cook posted three wins on the weekend while striking out eight.
Indian River Remains Perfect
The Pioneers moved to 12-0 on the season sweeping Daytona State, Hillsborough, and South Florida State.
