The Florida PGF State Tournament wrapped up this weekend, and if you were looking for a theme, it was simple: Mustangs, Mustangs, and more Mustangs. Tampa’s softball powerhouse stampeded through nearly every age division, hoisting trophies from 10U all the way through 16U. But it wasn’t a clean sweep—Santa Fe Inferno had something to say about that in 18U.

Here’s a breakdown from a weekend that delivered big bats, dominant arms, and a few “remember the name” performances.

10U: Mustangs Muscle Past Synergy in Final

Final: Mustangs 9, Synergy 3

The Mustangs capped off a gritty run with a convincing win in the 10U final, finishing the weekend at 4-1-1. As the No. 3 seed, they knocked off the top team on their side and kept that momentum rolling in the title game.

They tallied 7 hits and gave up just one earned run, showing off a balanced blend of timely offense and stingy defense.

Synergy actually outhit the Mustangs with 11 knocks, but couldn’t cash in—the kind of stat line that’ll keep a coach up at night.

12U: Mustangs Pontbriant Stay Perfect

Final: Mustangs 5, Central Florida Suns 1

Tampa Mustangs Pontbriant didn’t just win—they steamrolled. A perfect 7-0 weekend with a jaw-dropping 58-9 run differential ended with a 5-1 statement win over the talented Central Florida Suns.

Jacey S. was dominant in the circle, surrendering just four hits and one earned run in the final. On offense, it was the Ashley H. and Anaiah H. show—going a combined 5-for-6 at the plate.

Credit to the Suns, who went 6-1 and got strong games from Addison B. (2-2) and Luxs B. (2-3), but Tampa had too much in the tank.

14U: Tobiassen and Reeder-Gallway Power Szabo’s Squad

Final: Mustangs Szabo 10, Santa Fe Inferno Humphrey 3

It was another firepower finish for the Mustangs in 14U, where the Szabo squad racked up double-digit runs behind a monster game from Reese Tobiassen (3-3, double, triple, RBI) and Aliyah Reeder-Gallway (2-3, double, 3 RBI).

Victoria VanAlmen earned the win in the circle, with Paige Conroy helping close it out.

The Inferno, also 6-1 on the weekend, had some sparks of their own—Janalyn Duque reached base three times and drove in two, while Dani Humphrey had a 2-hit day—but they couldn’t keep up with the Mustangs’ pace.

16U: Rene-Pynes Mustangs Show Depth and Discipline

Final: Mustangs 6, Georgia Impact – McBay 3

The 16U Tampa Mustangs Rene-Pynes squad looked every bit like a team peaking at the right time. They went a perfect 7-0, sealing the title with a solid 6-3 win over a scrappy Georgia Impact team.

Madison Kokoszka threw three strong innings, allowing just one run, while the offense spread the love:

  • Madison Rider: 3-3, double

  • Gracyn Needle: 2-2, double, 2 RBI

  • Emma Pynes: 1-1, walk, double

Impact’s Kamryn Davis (2-2) and Ansley Harris (1-2, 2 RBI) gave it a go, but the Mustangs just kept answering the bell.

18U: Santa Fe Inferno Nowling Breaks the Mustang Streak

Final: Inferno 3, Mustangs Affrunti/Hancock 1

Finally, someone found the answer to the Mustang machine.

Santa Fe Inferno Nowling closed out the 18U division with a gritty 3-1 win, snapping Tampa’s run of dominance. Rylee Swilley was nearly untouchable—7 innings, 3 hits, 0 earned runs, 9 Ks—in one of the best pitching performances of the tournament.

On offense, C. Johnson (2-3, double, 2 RBI) and E. Mansfield (2-3) came through in clutch moments.

The Mustangs weren’t flat—Joiner (1-1) and Speers (2-3) did their part—but Inferno played clean, composed softball from first pitch to final out. Both teams went 7-0 and 6-1, respectively, so it felt like the final both teams earned.

Quick Shoutouts

Tournament operations ran like a well-oiled machine thanks to Bill Hoopes, Kristine Dolunt, and Kimberly Nivala, with a special nod to Buster, the ump who seemingly never misses a call—or a good one-liner.

Final Thought

From the 10U grind to the 18U chess match, the Florida PGF State Tournament served up a weekend of sunshine, skill, and statement wins. The Tampa Mustangs showed the depth of their program—four championships, one runner-up—and the Santa Fe Inferno reminded everyone that this state still has a little fire left outside the stable.

Want a team to watch this summer? Start with a Mustang—but keep one eye on the Inferno. Things could heat up again real soon.
